Where can I buy Waders?

Posted by admin on Monday, August 2nd, 2010

I really want to start fly fishing but I cant afford waders. I went to a local store and the cheapest ones they had were 40 dollars. Does anyone know where I can buy a cheap pair of hip length waders for less than 25 dollars?

Firstly some advice, NEVER buy thigh waders, its all to easy to “flood” them when wading, the advantages that a pair of chest waders hold is far greater than thigh/hip waders. As for less than $25 that could be hard unless you get a used pair, save up and buy some chest waders and quality wading boots, i used to use cabelas own brand and they aren’t bad, however when you use them all the time a pair of waders such as simms G4 is allot better to wear all day long, if you still want to buy waders for cheap check out ebay, although that will be the nylon waders with the built in boot for that price. Ebay has 352 items under the search word of “waders” so you should be able to find the right price for you.

Airflow is right on the money about waders. I suggest chest waders too. I did a lot of stream fishing with “cheap” waders and believe me… there is no such thing as cheap. They crack, leak, don’t patch well and give you a false sense of security so to speak. I was constantly patching or replacing them and when I added up the expense of what I spent over one season on cheap waders and repairs, I could have bought a really decent pair of chest waders and saved money and more importantly time. I recently purchased a new pair of chest waders with 3D camo pattern and 3 mil thick reinforced neopreme at Bass Pro Shops for around $100.00 . I planned to use them out on the salt flats fishing for flounder. I now get closer to everything in the water and I have pulled in hundreds of dollars worth of bait using these waders. They are lightweight and work like a charm. Get the chest waders, you’ll be glad you did! Tight lines.

I agree with Airflow about the thigh waders. Only jump into a pair of those after your are experienced. A cheap option may be to get the cheap PVC waders from Walmart with the sock style feet, and wear a pair of wading shoes over them. Those waders are pretty cheap, usually about $20.00. The downside to them is they are very hot and will make you sweat like the dickens. They are easy to repair when you get holes in them (and you will). Always wear a wading belt if you use waders!!!!!!!!!! I’m in a pair nearly everyday at my farm, and even in 4′ deep ponds I make my crew wear belts if the wear waders. My personal pair are neoprene which are form fitting, but those too are hot and very expensive.

before you go off on me everyone….. surfers used neoprene twenty years before fishermen got the hint about staying warm in cold water. Look mate I don’t know where you live but if you are near an ocean go to every thrift store around even inland they end up on the mens rain coat rack I see em all the time… eventually you will find a long john welsuit you can wear it with stiff ankle boots and socks and do it as cheap as 10 bucks used you want the long legs and the attached sleeveless tee shirt one piece with a zipper back but who cares if you put the zipper in front with your fly fishing vest on.

The type of wader you need to buy is kinda dependent on what kind of temperature you will be fishing in. If you go out fishing in a pair of neoprenes and its 80 degrees out…your not gonna last very long out there..breathable waders are whats called for there..if you plan to fish in colder weather..neoprenes would be what you need. If you happen upon a cheap pair on ebay or craigs list you may be able to buy a set of both for any weather situation. As far as bootfoot compared to stocking foot. there are trade-offs for each one. A bootfoot wader will keep your feet a little warmer in cold water. The reason is that there is an air space above your foot that stays warm because the heat is trapped in there. A stockingfoot wader ,which is my preference, allows you to choose the type of boot you like and the boot gives you much better ankle support than a bootfoot wader does. Thats a big thing if you are climbing up and down slick or ice- covered riverbanks. As mentioned earlier by several folks…always wear a belt..do it for your mothers sake…she worries you know.
Here’s a couple links to help you out.

I’ve been fly-fishing and wade-fishing all my life and the closest thing to waders i’ve owned is a set of mud boots for working out on the lease.

Unless your planning on doing it durring your lunch hour, well……
