whats the right fly fishing line?

i have a fly rod for both spin and fly fishing( im only using it for fly fishing) i was wondering what the right line was to use.
i know theres things like 2x 3x 4x and so on….i get what it means i just dont know what to use.
i also dont know if i shoulod have sinking or floating lines.
also leader? what do i use?
i am fishing for trout in rivers, ponds and lakes

Brandonon 23 Feb 2010 at 4:10 am 1Well you need to match the weight of your fly line with the weight of your rod your using for best castability (that should be on your rod).
I recommend a floating line for dry fly fishing.
As far as leaders go I like a tapered leader/tippet it helps with the way a fly lands on the water . Also use as small of a diameter tippet as possible ,especially in lakes and ponds.

I would also stick with a floating line, they are a bit easier to control and easier to detect strikes on. As for a leader, I would look at a tapered leader in a size 4x, 5x, or 6x……the higher the number the lighter the strength
Injunon 23 Feb 2010 at 5:28 am 3floating line if u will mainly use surface flies. and go with a short leader 4 to 6 foot to start with until u can cast good long leaders are a little harder to learn with. if u are catching small trout use the 3x or 4x tippet. also make sure your line weight matches your rod!
chris gon 23 Feb 2010 at 5:50 am 4If you have a top water fly you want a floating line with a thin leader to keep the fly on top. A sinking line should be used with larger flys and heavier baits such as spinners and artificial bugs or salmon eggs, or some cheese baits.
