What weight fly rod should I use for fishing for Sailfish in Guatemala?

sufimysticon 28 Feb 2010 at 11:58 pm 1I would say anything over a ten weight. Sailfish don’t get too huge but they are tough fighters. You’ll need a very good fly reel with lots of backing.
Dan the Manon 01 Mar 2010 at 12:32 am 2Uh, the sailfish in Guatemala can go to 120#, and the norm is probably 80 – 100#. Frankly, unless you are very experienced with fighting heavy fish on a flyrod, this ain’t really a great idea! They are tough enough on conventional tackle, plus your strike and catch ratio are going to generally be much lower than with trolled dead bait. If you are determined, I would not take less than a 12wt rod.
