Wanting To Buy My Husband A Good Fly Fishing Rod For His Birthday.?
Posted by admin on Tuesday, December 8th, 2009
I know nothing about fly fishing or rods. My husbands rod broke last summer and I would like to buy him a new one for his birthday and keep it a surprise, but I don’t know what kinds to look at or what specifications or what price is too much.

If not then a gift certificate for Cabelas.com would suit him better, as it allows him to select a rod, or other equipment. I say Cabelas over bass pro as cabelas has a wider range of fly fishing equipment.
AIRFLOWon 08 Dec 2009 at 6:38 pm 2You didn’t mention how much of a fly angler your husband is. The reason that I bring this up is that fly rods are very personal to the caster. They have varying sizes – fresh water smaller and salt water bigger and they also have varying ‘action’. Fast action rods usually have a stiffer feel than slow action rods.
If your husband really liked the rod that broke I suggest contacting the manufacturer, they often repair rods for a slight fee. Perhaps buying him the same rod as he broke or get him a gift certificate in a well supplied Fly Shop so that he can go cast a rod and feel the action before purchasing.
Great gift … lucky hubby.
FoxyFishon 08 Dec 2009 at 6:52 pm 3Enthusiastic fly fishers will replace a broken rod at first opportunity. Since he has not done something already, he probably is deciding to put fly fishing on a back burner for a while, or he may be trying to decide on defining his fly fishing differently. These are generally personal choices that are impossible for someone else to make. The wrong fly rod is an expensive mistake.
Check outdoor clothing. This is a lot easier to find a nice gift with less chance for error…
Rogeron 08 Dec 2009 at 7:35 pm 4You should get him a gift certificate.
Good Flyrods are expensive and you would not want to get the wrong weight, length, brand, Etc.
Most decent Fly rods start at $200 and a very nice one would be in the $400-$1000 range.
I suggest you get him a gift certificate and a Multi-tool.
Multi-tool?- http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores…
But, if your dead-set on buying a fly-rod I think Airflo or Pheasant-tail can point you in the right direction. I’m going to “star” your Q in the hopes they will see it and answer.
Hopes this helps? Good luck in your search.
Fisher_Kon 08 Dec 2009 at 8:30 pm 5oh dear– you have opened a can of worm’s on this one– the size
the weight the action-all have to be considered where does you husband fish what does your husband fish-all of this is Crucial in the Choice of rod –the other Gentleman is correct if you have access to the rod (broken one) then contact the maker and see about repair that would please him the most beyond a shadow of a doubt
spooty1on 08 Dec 2009 at 8:44 pm 6Well what kind of rod did he break? I mean you have quite a range of options out there, not just rod weight either, but how much $$$ do you want to spend? You can spend anywhere from $50 to $500 easy on a fly rod.
I’d ask him what weight rod and what brand so atleast you can get a comparable pole.
Bobon 08 Dec 2009 at 8:58 pm 7Find out where he goes to buy things for fly fishing, what fly shop(s)
Go to that shop, bring his picture. If he’s that much into fly fishing they will know him and what his fishing preferences are. Ask them what he would like.
