I am leaving out of town and i dont have the time to go buy a leader so im just wondering if I couldnt create my own

I am a beginning fly fisherman and have a redington crosswater 5 wt. which I like, except in learning to cast I snapped the leader a couple times and lost the fly. The leader looks like about 4lb mono. Can I get away with using regular fishing line, say 6lb test as leader?
