I would recommend looking into a Cortland rod and reel combo in a 6wt. The reason that i recommend cortland is they have an excellent warranty on their products. It doesn't matter what you do or how old it is, they will repair/replace your rod or reel. I know people that have closed them in car doors and got them replaced FREE ( minus shipping). Since you are just getting started, this rod will work great and you wont notice a quality difference between this and a top of the line setup.

The tippet material will depend on the exact fish that you are targeting that day and the water conditions. If it is really clear and slow you will need a lighter weight, if it is fast and dirty i would go with a heavier weight leader and tippet.

Good luck and tight lines!

Fly fishing can get expensive, and really fast (what can't nowdays, lol).

I don't see the need for a $600-1200 fly fishing combo for a beginner. I learned on a 25 year old fiberglass flyrod. You can pick up a nice kit from Scientific Angler or the house brands at Cabelas or BPS for about $100-200.
