Translation: if you want cheap waders you can’t have Simms waders. Simms and other top-shelf waders have for a long time been reserved for very serious anglers, guides, and those with lots of disposable income. Those who are just getting into fly fishing and those with less cash have had to settle for the cheap-o brands like Hodgman or Coleman.

Fortunately, this is changing — Simms has apparently realized that they’re missing an important share of the wader biz by pricing thrifty anglers right out of the market. Of course you can still spend $700 on Simms waders:

But you can also get into a set of Simms for $100:

I would not expect the Blackfoot waders to be as posh, durable, or comfortable as the G4s, but I would expect the Simms set to be better than, say, a similarly priced pair of neoprene Hodgemans that has been sitting on the shelf at Walmart for 3+ years.
Interestingly, the reverse is true, too — Hodgman and other bottom-shelf companies are trying to grab some of the high-end market by making high-dollar waders with some of the features that Simms waders have. I’d be less prone to give those a try, but I’m actually considering getting a pair of those Blackfoots for backpacking…
