Fly Fishing Rods

I am looking into buying my first fly fishing outfit but I have a few questions?

Posted by admin on Saturday, December 26th, 2009

I know that i’ll be using this outfit on lake planted trout and maybe large-mouthed bass at some of our local park lakes.(live in san bernardino, california) And maybe big bear/arrow head lakes. What goes on my reel, backing, fly line,tippet? First time to setup and not sure. Dio

    the L.L. Bean Fly-Fishing Handbook is an excellent source. Myself I took a non credit fly fishing course at our local Junior College and learned the basics. Actually they say a good starter rod and reel combo will cost around $200.00 I plan to get a good one one day but I have been using a $20.00 Walmart Flay Rod and Rell combo. The funny thing about that class is we also paid to go on a field trip to Beavers Bend and since we did not have our expensive rods yet we used the furnished rods wich were $20.00 combo at the fly shop on the river.

    Out of 6 people I was the only one who caught anything that day. Anyway that book will give you most of the information you will need. Here is a link to a fly fishing forum if you are interested

    I have two fly fishing set – ups for exactly what you describe. The one I use most is a Hobbs Creek, White River, 8’9″ rod with a Martin Classic MC78 reel. I have 150yds of 20lb braided nylon backing, then S.A. Ultra3, WF7F fly line. I have a second spool with a sinking tip line for fishing wet flies. For trout I use store bought tapered leaders (Anywhere from 2X to 6X) with matching tippet. For Bass,Walleye, and other larger fish I just use a straight 8lb mono leader, approximately 8ft long.

    If you’re going with just one outfit, I would choose a #6 weight outfit, with a rod at least 8 feet long. That will give you the versatility to fish both species.

    Load the reel with a weight-forward floating line (#6WFF), with enough backing to fill the reel fully. To the flyline attach a leader tapering to 0x. For the bass, merely use 10 or 12 pound mono as a tippit. For the trout, taper down to whatever is required, which for lake fish usually is about 4x.

    I would recommend a 7wt medium to fast action rod, with a minimum size of 9.6ft, this will allow easier casting and fish control. A a 6wt would be fine, but since your just starting out a 7wt will allow you to apply more pressure and handle those larger stocked rainbows.

    When you become more experienced you might want to move onto a 6wt or even a 5wt.

    For line setup it goes;

    Backing-standard 20lb dacron wil be fine for starting out.

    Fly line- buy a Weight Forward (WF) taper,as it will allow for easier casting. Buy the best line you can afford its vital as that’s what carries your fly, good brands are rio, airflo, scientific anglers, Cortland.

    Then you need a tapered leader of about 7lb test, a tippet is added when the leader becomes too short.

    Lots of info on fly fishing, especially check out the links to the left of the page, they have some very useful websites etc.

    This is the cheapest you will find this outfit, however call them and ask if they can supply a 7wt instead, Kevin who runs it should be able to help you out, tell him airflow, sent ya!

    This is another good outfit that should work great
