hoghunteron 20 Feb 2010 at 5:59 am 1well quality is the main thing. you get what you pay for. you can find a GOOD rod and reel for around $200. after that the flys are easy. just start colecting them as you go and adding to your tackle.i have a #5 sage rod and reel and its my other half lol
Zara Pupon 20 Feb 2010 at 6:22 am 2Most people start out flyfishing with a fiberglass rod and level taper line. You can find a fiberglass rod for around 20-30 dollars new. Level taper fly line is not very expensive at all.
On the other end, you can easily spend upwards of 1000 dollars on ahigh-end graphite rod and anywhere from 30-60 dollars for double-taper flyline. That doesn’t include a fly reel, which can run from around 80-600 dollars. Flyfishing can be an expensive hobby. Trust me. I know.
If I were you, I would buy this set from Cabela’s. Look at the model 906-2 rod:
http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/product/standard-item.jsp?_DARGS=/cabelas/en/common/catalog/item-link.jsp_A&_DAV=MainCatcat20431-cat20433-cat20457_TGP&id=0051114320440a&navCount=4&podId=0051114&parentId=cat20457&masterpathid=&navAction=push&catalogCode=8IS&rid=&parentType=index&indexId=cat20457&hasJS=true
It comes rod, reel, backing, and line. It’s a quality 6-weight beginner rod. It’s a full nine feet, which is best to learn with.
Logic316on 20 Feb 2010 at 6:59 am 3You *might* find a decent fly rod for $100 or a bit less, if you look hard enough, though most anglers agree that rods in this price range usually stink. Almost everything in the $150-$300 range is good quality. But rods that cost upwards of $300 mainly just have more aesthetic froo-froo on them.
fastrmastrblastron 20 Feb 2010 at 7:05 am 4I used to build/remanufacture engines for a living, & most folks just wanted to extend the life of their vehicles for another couple of years, so repair/replacement of worn parts were the norm. But there was also those who just wanted their rides to perform at a higher rate than where they were at.
So, …….I gotta ask you,……. How fast do you want to go? If your going to ride along on a bug, then you can get into flyfishing for under $100.00. But if you wanna fly along comfortably, the price range increases from $200.00 to around $800.00, and if you wanna ride Cadillac, then I hope your daddy is filthy rich, because the prices just skyrocket way out of proportion. ( I saw an ad for a 6 split bamboo, custom made rod, & the pricey tag on it was around $2700.00) That is like asking me if I’d like to take a trip to Mars, or someplace in our intergalactic system, and that’s just for a weekend, frills are extra.
Naw, no thanks, guess I’ll just stay here and go fishin’ with my ol’ cane pole.
Do your research, check the different stores, flyfishing sites, ebay, watch for specials, or maybe you can set up an alert for fly fishing gear on your pc. The i’net is a very informative tool, if you can figure out how to take advantage of it.
