Posted by admin on Saturday, December 12th, 2009

I’m not too good a tying flies to leader on my line and I was wondering what a good amount of leader to lose in process.
Any help will help of course!

Don’t tie flies directly onto the leader. Tie a piece of tippet onto the leader and tie the fly onto that. Those leaders are expensive and a whole spool of tippet is about the same price. I have the same problem and the tippet really helps.

use a double surgeons to add tippet or lengthen your tapered leaders, I find it much easier than a bloodknot. use a clinch knot to tie the flys on to either leader or tippet. I can tie a clinch knot with about 1 inch or less of length of the leader lost, but this is less important to me than getting a good knot tied. if you learn to add tippet then how much is lost tying on flys becomes unimportant.

You need to attach a length of tippet of around a 1ft in length to the end of your tapered leader-this is then replaced when it becomes very short. The following videos should help you decide which knots to use and how to tie droppers.http://www.totalflyfisher.com/Videos/cat…

I do not remember if the video i inclosed below goes in to tying a not on a leader. It also is more geared towards bass fishing. It is a good video none the less. Hope it helps
