Has Anyone Bought Fly Fishing Gear Online?

kelhallaon 28 Nov 2009 at 4:44 pm 1I’ve bought quite a lot of fly fishing stuff online, but I’ve never really bought something “blind.” That is, I’ve never researched a major purchase online and bought it unless I’ve at least looked at it and handled it in a store. I’ve always picked what I wanted (a rod or reel or whatever) by trying it out first at a store or by borrowing a friend’s, then purchasing online. Online sellers can often offer bigger selections and better prices than brick-and-mortar shops. While I try to support my local retailers, sometimes you’ve got to go online to get what you want at the best price.
I think I’ve looked at classicflyfishing.com a time or two but have never bought anything there. I’ve heard praise for those Hardy reels but they’re a little out of my price range — I’m not sure I’ve ever even seen one. So far I’ve had no trouble catching fish on reels in the $100 price range, but if that’s what your dad wants and you’re going to get him one, all I can say is — you’re a very good son. Heh.
Chaddon 28 Nov 2009 at 5:02 pm 2The Hardy brand reels have stood the test of time. My friends who use them always get a smile on their faces when they talk about them. One fellow especially enjoys the screaming noise when a good fish straightens the string. They all refuse to upgrade to a modern design reel even though they stay current with the latest and greatest lines and rods.
Personally, I like the newer large arbor reels.
For a gift purchase, this is almost like buying expensive jewelery. Discuss it with the recipient to be sure of getting something that is wanted.

Rogeron 28 Nov 2009 at 5:07 pm 3another thing to do is go to cabelas website and just read the reviews…now yes people will rate something bad just because they didnt take care of it and it broke but i was gonna buy a fly rod from someone it was brand new he just didnt want it so i read the reviews about that rod and found out that the reel seat fell out of this model quite often so i decided not to get it
