Fly fishing rod & reel for boyfriend as a birthday gift, any suggestions?

Posted by admin on Wednesday, January 13th, 2010

Hey, I’m looking to give my boyfriend a fly fishing rod for his birthday. He lives in Michigan and would fish around there. He’s never fly fished before but is very experienced with all other fishing aspects. I’m looking to spend under $200 total on a rod and reel, and don’t want some cheap-o “beginner’s package”. I don’t necessarily need a pre-made combo, so if you suggest a reel and a rod that are separate that’s great too. Thanks for your help!

Will you marry me? Ha ha… just kidding. That is awesome. The smaller fisherman’s stores will help you. I’d go in and ask them.

Michigan is a great state to get started fly fishing. The thing about this sport is that you spend a lot of money getting started. I would suggest you go to cabelas.com and find one of their rods and reel combos, i would say a 5 weight 9 foot rod, this will handle most fish. Cabelas also supplies you with line and you might have enough left over toi buy him flies, a good Eastern selection will work wonders.

Cabelas is the spot to go if you want good stuff on sale. Like this combo that i saw one guy using and said he really loved. http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/product/standard-item.jsp?_DARGS=/cabelas/en/common/catalog/item-link.jsp_A&_DAV=MainCatcat20431-cat20433-cat20469&id=0044179319587a&navCount=5&podId=0044179&parentId=cat20469&masterpathid=&navAction=push&catalogCode=IK&rid=&parentType=index&indexId=cat20469&hasJS=true

This is a good brand name rod and reel combo and he will be happy with it.

He will need flies which the place you go can help you with or the locals.

Backing- first thing tthat goes on the fly reel

Fly line- dont buy crappy line it will backfire big time.

You will next need a leader.

And then tippet this is the last thing on the line this is tied to the hook.

    he will also need waders.

You will be spending a little over $200 if you dont buy quality stuff.

Good luck to both of you.

Here’s a no frills outfit that includes the flyline and backing in addition to the rod and reel. Your boyfriend would enjoy this and it is not a “cheap” beginner’s package. Chances are he’ll have it for a long time.
Living in Michigan I would reccomend the 8’5″ 5wt package
