wana bigger bikeon 05 Feb 2010 at 2:30 am 1nope you want a long leader it is the iinvisible barier between the fly and yellow line aka fly line but if you are fishing quicker little rivers id use a 7 to 7.5 ft leader for lakes and larger rivers i would use a 9 ft and if you can find it some guys like a 10 or 12 ft for lakes but you dont need that
phdcast146on 05 Feb 2010 at 3:11 am 2as your leader begins to shrink, due to re-tying of flies.
one generally, adds tip it. orvis makes great tip it.
but any clear tip it will do. just tie a loop on the end of your leader and a loop to the tip it. its called loop to look connection.
it makes that leader last longer. good luck

The tippet replaces the line you have lost from fly changes-which is important, if a fly isn’t working change it! all to often i see anglers who use the same fly for hours with no takes, after a few good casts and no fish change the color, weight, size, type of fly until you find the right one.
Since it pre-rigged its likely to be standard monofilament line, i would suggest adding a co-polymer tippet to this then attaching your fly.
A good tippet material is important so buy the best you can afford as not only will it hold your fish but you don’t want something that will spook it either.
Join your one foot of tippet to the leader with this knot

Cheap but stiff tippet that will reduce knots when casting, i dont use this stuff but i know others who do like it and since your just starting out price may be a problem
