Wish I was more articulate.I just know what I like.I use every thing all the time.Mostly I pay attention to what bits me in the neck then I use the same type and color of bug.Normally I don’t fly fish in afternoon just early AM luck nymph any time

You have the basic idea, but it really depends more on what’s happening, than the time of day, although the time of day usually does determine whats happening-

Usually, early before the hatch actually happens, you start off with the nymph, and you’ll fish that until you start seeing rises. that is usually when the emergers are starting to come to the surface, but you don’t yet see the duns (adults). fish the nymphs or emergers til the duns start appearing, then switch to the dry flies. Fish those until a spinner fall occurs. this can be silmutaneous, or towards the end of the hatch.

it usually goes nymph, emerger, dun, spinner.

Yes, you can fish the nymph anytime, but it may not be the best choice at the moment, although you will be fishing it the most. pay attention to what the fish seem to be eating, and know that they can become selective to any one stage- not just all the fish, but certain fish, so you may have to try each of the flies til you figure it out.

The proper way to fish the spinner is dead drift, as a dry.

A lot of times, the spinner may not float properly- the heaviest part of the hook is the bend, and it may sink, giving the fly a down hanging appearance. You can beat this by tying your spinners on the hook backwards- then the greater floatation of the wings will be over the hook bend and can help prevent this.

    Good luck!

You have almost got it, i will just add my two cents to see if i can help you sort this out, firstly nymphs are good to try at any time of the day, fish them on a floating line with a long leader and fish them SLOWLY, however if you see fish rising for the surface feeding on stuck/drowned flies such as the daddy long legs then go straight to a dry fly with a little gink added. Also on any evenings you can also use dries, some of the best surface sport is when the sun starts to go down, if its very cold and Ive tried nymphs i will go onto streamers such s the woolly bugger fished on a intermediate line with a fluorocarbon leader
Good nymphs to try are the PTN, GRHE, Montana nymph, original. There’s lost of info on here
