Do People Use Real Flies To Go Fly Fishing?

Posted by admin on Friday, December 11th, 2009

Again the Trail of the Insects. I believed that they only used fake flies, not real flies. So what is it?

Fly fishermen create their own (or buy) artificial flies because they are far more hardy and longer lasting than a real insect would be. In addition, for many of the fishermen, the real sport is in catching a fish on a fly which they themselves created from scratch. Flies can be made from any number of artificial, natural or synthetic materials and in many instances, do not even resemble an actual insect, fish, or animal. In addition, the artificial flies can be kept for generations with little or no maintenance whereas the real insects would be much harder to care for and maintain in usable condition. Also, the purist fly-fisherman would be totally revolted by the thought of actually using a living insect as bait. You would have as much luck trying to talk them into using worms. ;o)

    Strictly artificial flies!
Although i have seen live flies used, in a method of “dapping” this can be done with either artificials or live “daddies”(daddy long legs aka crane fly, also used is the mayfly) ive seen this ancient practice used a few times in Irish Loughs, for wild brown trout. the wind is used to cast the live flies, via the dapping floss into the water, for a perfect natural presentation.
However ive never seen thats done any where else in the world, so to answer your question 99.9% of fly fishing is using artificial fly.

i would say no because the colors of a real fly may look dull or like a tree that is creating shade but a fake fly is colorful and attracts the fish and be like oh yum a colorful thing so yer might be abit confusing plz put me as best answer

Fake mimics the real thing. Real won’t last long but will work in a survival situation. Most people use fake.
