    Hi Tomo,

I’m not the most experienced fly fisherman being 20 yrs of age… However I’ve been told and read allot of articles on the subject and they all say the same thing! it’s not the biggest cast’s that catch the fish, the key is presentation of the fly! if you can ‘read’ the water cast and drift the right lines it can be quite rewarding. Also – Only wade if you absolutely have to, a trout can sense vibration in water from many meters and in NZ they are very easy to spook!

    hey,
Do you have any tips that you are willing to give away for fishing the river? I usually fish the straights, stand in the water, and cast as far as i can up stream, and fish it back to be, usually results in a few fish, but always wanting to learn!

    Hey,

I’m a local and regular fisher of the Ngongotaha only recently started fly fishing again recently… I have to say inducing a strike in that stream (paradise valley) even with the many trout is often difficult if not impossible for myself just trying to get a good cast away in some places due to the trees and bush around is tough! – However early morns by the Ngo bridge or Waiteti produce many hookup opportunities without fouling it’s awesome!

Often Trout and Salmon will attack the fly and at the last second refuse it and as it turns in retreat get their tails hooked.
They all count when you put them back.

Nice fish. The Nongataha holds a huge amount of good size rainbows and browns, my 1st was 6.25lb and caught plenty more but am still seeking the double figure.

at least you didnt hook him in the belly, that would be plain embarassing!

  24. hockyekohon 31 Dec 2009 at 10:28 am 24

that fish doesn’t count as a catch if you didnt hook it in the mouth guy
